ONE CONFEDERATE SOLDIER
SAID, " THEY LOAD THEM ON SUNDAY, THEN SHOOT ALL WEEK"..... CIVIL WAR/HISTORY!! HENRY RIFLE, .44 RIM FIRE Henry rifles were manufactured from 1860 to 1866 in a very small quantity of only 14,000 rifles. Both the rifle and the cartridge were the invention of B.Tyler Henry, and was a major advancement with the metallic self contained cartridge. The Henry Rifle found it's way into service during the Civil War, and many were purchased at the expense of the individual in the unit. Further and extensive details can be found in " The Historic Henry Rifle" by Wiley Sword. THIS HENRY, is listed by Serial Number, on Page 75 of the Wiley Sword text. In addition, it is listed as a 2nd U.S. Contract Purchase , thus making it a U.S. This Henry Rifle has serious and significant Civil War history. One of the greatest fears of the North as the Civil War was winding down to it's conclusion, was REVENGE! Unfortunately witnessed by the assassination of Lincoln, but BEFORE that the concern for the safety of Washington D.C. and it's historic buildings. President Lincoln found in Northern Veteran Union supporters, who were all GERMAN immigrants and unionist's. Henry Rifle Serial Number761X, is very special. It was one of the Henry's Issued to the United States Veteran Volunteers. The USVV was an all German immigrant unit. This Henry, along with 3 other known examples, was engraved on the side of the frame, with the Soldiers Name, and unit, see image to the right. This unit guarded the approach to Washington DC to prevent any revenge action by the faltering Confederacy. No wonder Lincoln armed them with the VERY best weapon available, the Henry!! Today the Henry has aged very naturally. The frame has the perfect "mustard patina", and remains untouched. The engraving is clear and present, and identifies the man and unit. The barrel address is present and well defined, and the barrel has the original sight. The wood is smooth, and shows only normal handling over 143 years. This Henry has the Military swivel for strap on the stock, and the matching swivel loop on the barrel, and is original to the Henry since 1865. The barrel has only "spotting of blue" and is now a soft pleasing gray patina. The screw heads are clean and not "buggered", and all rifle edges are still sharp. The lever action functions perfectly, in fact a very crisp action. The loading procedure also functions perfectly. All parts are ORIGINAL, and serial numbered to the rifle. A VERY HISTORIC rifle, both in Civil War history, and the fact it is a Henry! SOLD

F. Barth is verifiable in the Archives, along with the unit. The other known Henry has the name Chr. Handel, all other engraving and unit information is identical. It appears in the George Madis book on page 35&45.
